Broken Words

I’ve stood on stages around the world.

I’ve also spent my entire life negotiating with my own mouth.

Broken Words is the story of what happens in between the version nobody sees from the audience. It moves from city to city: Bangkok, Adelaide, Perth, Singapore, Paris, Cancún, New Orleans, Cape Town. Each chapter brings you into a speaking engagement – the ones that went well, and the ones that didn’t – and reveals the mental machinery running underneath. I detail my speaking sequences, the sentence rearranging happening mid-word, and the methodology built from a lifetime of managing a stutter in real time, in front of people who paid to watch me speak.

This is a record of the blocks, the prolongations, the repetitions, the days it all fell apart – and what it actually costs for me to walk out on stage. Along the way it becomes a book about communication, public speaking, storytelling, and the conversations that shaped my career – and hopefully, will do the same for you.

“Think about the last time you were truly inspired, motivated, connected, excited, humbled, and passionate at a work event. Take all those feelings, add so many more, multiple them several times over and then add in a sprinkle of magic that makes people leave a room enthused to take what they have heard and do something with it. That’s what Shil does.”
